About Yan Pothin

Sydney based Designer Yan Pothin first made a name for himself as a young designer in the mid 1980’s.  After moving to Brisbane and whilst in his first year studying Fashion Design at Mount Gravatt TAFE, he was selected to show his designs in the student category of the televised prestigious Queensland Fashion Industry Awards (The RAQ Awards) in 1987 (view). He was selected later that year to present at Melbourne’s glamorous Gown Of The Year with sponsorship from Ansett Airlines.  The gown was worn by actress Nicki Paull (view). Moving back to Sydney in the early 90’s he launched his first mainstream clothing label, Bosswana Australia (view) which sold in a number of select boutiques throughout Australia and featured in magazines such as Elle, Dolly and Good Weekend (view).  His designs were regularly seen on TV show’s such as Heartbreak High and Chances.  Yan’s desire to further his study in fashion took him to a Degree in design when in1996 he was accepted into the University of Technology Sydney’s (UTS) design course and graduated in 2000 with a BA in Design, First Class Honours.  In his final year he showed at Mercedes Fashion Week 2000 with one of his creations featuring in cutting edge Pavement Magazine (view).  Yan’s daring latex and copper bodice was also used by Film Director of Dark City and Mystery Clock productions Alex Proyas.  After graduating from University he went on to work for a number of commercial fashion houses which gave him the opportunity to work in China and experience designing for high volume mainstream fashion.  However, his desire to return to a more specialized hands on approach to design drew him towards custom made clothing in particular Bridal Wear.  Designing Wedding Gowns gave Yan greater creative freedom, hence the creation of Soma Design in 2004, specializing in Bridal and Evening Couture.  For Soma, Yan is truly in his element and loves working with exquisite French laces, beaded tulles and imported silks creating one-off gowns that reflect his client’s personality and individual style.  In a special feature for Ragtrader Magazine  Yan was invited to talk about the industries great love affair with lace (view).  Gowns by Soma have also graced the pages of top Bridal Magazines such as Studio Bides, My Perfect Wedding, Bride to Be and Cosmo Brides.  In other design portfolio’s Soma Design has produced a number of commissioned interior design work’s for Australian Interior’s Magazine and Vogue Living’s special White Issue (view).  More recently one of Yan’s Bridal Gowns was used in Film Director Gemma Lees short film, The Bride, Produced by Taxi Films (view stills)  (view video).  Some of his clients include Artist Marion Borgelt (view link), Actor Josephine Byrnes (view Link) and concert Pianist Andrea Lam (view link).
